Dexter: Devil or Angel?

Title: Devil or Angel
The Story Behind The Art: Recently, I was laid up with a broken shoulder after falling off the treadmill at the gym (that's what I get for trying to stay in shape!). So I was lying around on pain meds, unable to do much other than watch TV. I decided to give the show Dexter a try and instantly got hooked by the performances of Michael C. Hall, watching all the seasons in a marathon. He plays Dexter, a forensic scientist by day and a "good" serial killer by night - one that only kills other murderers. I got my sketchbook out and had to capture this great character who is lovable bad and vigilante good. Thanks for taking those suckers out of our world, Dex!

Sabrina

Title: Sabrina
The Story Behind The Art: This piece is a step towards a more free and abstracted style for me. It was painted rather quickly and inspired by the movie Sabrina (which was playing in the background...). The character is the daughter of a chauffeur and as a teenager she would climb up in a tree and gaze longingly on the festivities of the wealthy owners of the estate she lived on. Her dreams come true at one point in the film and she is invited to one of the gala parties...

A Santa Barbara Family

This is a large oil painting I recently completed for a commission.
It is for a family portrait and it depicts them in front of their Santa Barbara home. I worked from an old photo of the group, posing around 1980. And from a few fotos of the family home in the background.

The Raven Exhibition in San Francisco

You may see my recent artwork -  Quoth The Walken - included in this upcoming show.

Opening Reception: Saturday, December 15th, 2012,  6-10 pm

Exhibition Dates: December 15 - January 6th, 2012

“Nevermore” a group show inspired by Poe’s “The Raven”. "The Raven" is often noted for its dark and supernatural atmosphere and has been inspiring artists since it’s first publication in 1845. It tells the tale of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, documenting the man's slow fall into madness. The lover, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to perpetuate his distress with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore".

This piece will be on exhibition in the upcoming Nevermore show at Modern Eden in San Francisco.

Opening Reception:
Saturday December 15, 2012, 6-10 pm

Exhibition Dates:
December 15 - January 6, 2012

As a young girl I used to read a collected stories, Edgar Allen Poe book that my parents had lying around the house. It was full of beautiful black and white engravings which I stared at for hours. However, it did not have The Raven included in it. The first time I heard the poem it was in the movie "The Dead Zone", based on the book by Stephen King. The main character (which Christopher Walken played), was reading it and the subject matter of a lost love was a strong theme in the plot. Ever since then I always think of Walken when I hear the poem or someone mentions it. He is also one of my favorite actors, with a really great face - so it was a pleasure to paint.

Double Your Art Pleasure, Double Your Fun

Coming up in San Francisco at Modern Eden is a very interesting and fun idea for a show, all the artists paired up to collaborate on one project together. I teamed up with the lovely collage artist Katie McCann and we both were inspired to do an homage to Frida Kahlo. After all she gave to us, it's nice to pay it back... or forward as the case may be. Lots of great artist pairings here...
This show is in conjunction with an exhibition of Double Parlour - two shows of twos!

Allied Forces opens Nov. 17th, Reception: 6-10 pm
Shows thru Dec. 9th
