Let Love Grow

Title: Let Love Grow
The Story Behind The Art:  Love, hence the heart, is the simple message here. Most importantly love for our environment. Take care of the forests and the green growth, tend to the oceans - don't pollute their waters. It's our world and we are burning it up. Do small things everyday to help make a change - if everyone else did, the results would be gigantic. This piece is painted on recycled found wood.

Love is gentle as a rose
And love can conquer any war
It's time to take a stand
Brothers and sisters join hands
We got to let love rule
Let love rule
- Lenny Kravitz

Just Desserts

Title:  Just Desserts
The Story Behind The Art:  Where do I start with this guy?
Randall Terry is an anti-abortionist, the founder of Operation Rescue.
He disowned his own son after he came out as being gay.
He voiced public approval of the murder of  George Tiller, who was shot in the head by an anti-abortion activist. Tiller was a much needed doctor at an abortion clinic, one of the few good souls willing to save women's lives.
I periodically get fed up with religious hypocrites and bigots and the general misogyny that abounds in our world, and art is a great place for me to vent angry feelings. To all those who disagree with this - when Terry can get pregnant, he may have some say in these matters...  Until then,  I hope he and his kind, get their just desserts.

Head In The Clouds

Title:  Head In The Clouds
The Story Behind The Art:  This piece is a large mixed media canvas, playing around with a looser, freer style and subject. Cotton topped trees reflect her big cotton hair which doubles as a cloud. The vintage gown is composed of collaged layers of transparent paper and paint. The young woman is relishing her natural world, transported by the trees and the clouds to a psychedelic serenity and spiritual awakening. She is a young woman experiencing oneness and mindfulness, growing aware and becoming her own goddess.
As the youth of today might say - "It is baked".

Hedgehog Takes A Ride

Title:  Hedgehog Takes A Ride
The Story Behind The Art:  The unquestionable cuteness of the hedgehog was the inspiration behind this piece. Also the desire to paint a lighter, more whimsical piece, an homage to our natural world. Placing an animal in a human setting or role helps to connect us with our environment in a wonderful and empathetic way. This little guy put on his top hat and got out his magic carpet to sail around the sun.

In central Asia and parts of Iran, the hedgehog is associated with agricultural abundance, fertility and the gift of fire. In these cultures it is considered a solar power animal, and is strongly connected to the energy and vitality of the sun. This may be further understood when we think of the hedgehog's splayed spikes look much like the spanning rays of the sun.

Harajuku Geisha

Title:
Harajuku Geisha (The Old Meets The New)
The Story Behind The Art:  This is another piece for my ongoing Geisha series. (See the definition below for this theme's inspiration.)  I wanted to show a modern day version of the Geisha contrasted with the old and Harajuku girls were the perfect juxtaposition. The face is loosely based on the singer Bjork, she has an impish quality which has always called to me. Not to mention, I love her music and persona.
Geisha – The word consists of two kanji, 芸 (gei) meaning “art” and 者 (sha) meaning “person” or “doer”. The most literal translation of geisha into English would be “artist,” “performing artist,” or “artisan.”

Dexter: Devil or Angel?

Title: Devil or Angel
The Story Behind The Art: Recently, I was laid up with a broken shoulder after falling off the treadmill at the gym (that's what I get for trying to stay in shape!). So I was lying around on pain meds, unable to do much other than watch TV. I decided to give the show Dexter a try and instantly got hooked by the performances of Michael C. Hall, watching all the seasons in a marathon. He plays Dexter, a forensic scientist by day and a "good" serial killer by night - one that only kills other murderers. I got my sketchbook out and had to capture this great character who is lovable bad and vigilante good. Thanks for taking those suckers out of our world, Dex!

Sabrina

Title: Sabrina
The Story Behind The Art: This piece is a step towards a more free and abstracted style for me. It was painted rather quickly and inspired by the movie Sabrina (which was playing in the background...). The character is the daughter of a chauffeur and as a teenager she would climb up in a tree and gaze longingly on the festivities of the wealthy owners of the estate she lived on. Her dreams come true at one point in the film and she is invited to one of the gala parties...

Hope Is The Thing With Feathers...

Title: Hope
The Story Behind The Art: So many times in life we all lose hope and experience loved ones and friends in need of hope. Hope - to survive in the face of illness, to love again after a broken heart, to achieve our passions and goals in the face of rejection, to escape poverty or discrimination, or just to keep on keepin' on...
A number of people in my life have died from cancer and having the hope to continue on through pain and sadness, is a humbling thing to witness.
This artwork was inspired by an Emily Dickinson poem which ignited imagery of the freedom hope can give one - like birds escaping from a cage or a spirit from human form.
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -

The Eye of the Sky

Title: In The Eye Of The Sky
The Story Behind The Art: This piece is inspired by spiritual magic, the occult and a universal vision - hence the solo eye. It is painted on a recycled Ouija board which I have let various parts peek through... As a kid I loved playing on a Ouija board during slumber parties and they still hold a dear place in my heart.
